Hello!
My name is Christine Nguyen, and I'm an Apparel Design student at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities who will be graduating in 2026. I'm passionate about working with my hands, and like to spend my free time doing everything from sewing formal dresses to painting graphic tees. Apart from fashion, I also enjoy art, animation, music, crochet, creative reading and writing, and many other things! I hope to foster a career where I can utilize my skills, diligence, and creativity and bring all these aspects of myself to one place.
My Dream
Growing up, I never really felt that I had a "passion". For a long time, I worried about this because every book and movie kept telling me "chase your dreams", so what was I supposed to do if I didn't really have one? I played the piano and violin. I liked to draw and paint sometimes. I'd crochet pillows and build desk organizers out of old boxes and cardboard. I'd read fantasy books and try to write some of my own. But I didn't seem to truly have a dream.
As I approached the end of high school, I still wasn't sure what I wanted to do, but I knew I liked math and chemistry well enough, so I started college as a Chemistry major and told myself I could get a nice job in STEM to support whatever endeavors I actually wanted to pursue outside of work. But after a year of classes, I was thinking about how chemistry wasn't really all that interesting and how much more exciting it would be to do something more creative. On a whim, I changed my major to Apparel Design and I now know it was the right choice.
Something I've realized about myself over the last year is that even with my amazing new major, there isn't just one thing I want to do. Sure, I love to design clothes, pattern them, pick out fabrics, and sew, but that isn't all I care about. What really brings me joy is conveying a message, whether that is the personality that clothes present, the emotions that music expresses, or the world that art relays. It's still true that I don't have one thing I will forever be passionate about, but I'm no longer worried about that. As long as I'm telling a story, I know I'm "chasing my dream".
